Born in Cheriton Fitzpaine in Mid Devon, Samuel was the son of dairy farmer Samuel senior and Charlotte Keen, who had seven children.
The 1891 census shows the family living at Brook Farm, Tiverton, but young Samuel later became a waggoner and a resident of East Budleigh.
He served in the 8th Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment, and was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
Private Keen, 14817, was killed in action in Flanders aged 35, and is remembered with honour on the Loos Memorial at the Dud Corner Cemetery in the Pas-de-Calais, France.
