William was born in East Budleigh, the son of Christopher and Mary Ann Sanders, of Cranes Lane.
A private, he enlisted in the 5th Battalion of the Princess Charlotte of Wales (Royal Berks) Regiment at Reading. The battalion was formed in the Berkshire town at the end of August 1914.
Private 10540 Sanders died aged 27 in France, and is buried in the Ancre British Cemetery at Beaumont-Hamel.
He is also remembered with honour on the East Budleigh memorials.
